Our Program

Who we serve

  • Primarily UTK–5 students, with content adapted by grade band (UTK–1, 2–3, 4–5).

  • Schools and community partners in under-resourced and underrepresented areas are prioritized.

  • Libraries, after-school programs, camps, and youth centers.

What Kids Do

  • Learn: a short, age-appropriate lesson on plant parts, photosynthesis, water cycles, and everyday sustainability.

  • See: a quick demo on potting, watering, light, and troubleshooting (“Why are leaves yellow?”).

  • Do: Q&A and a mini reflection on “one small thing I can do for the planet.”

  • Take: a home-grown spider plant + a one-page care guide (English/Spanish available).

Program Formats

  • In-Class Visits (best for schools): 30 minutes per class; we can visit multiple classes in a day.

  • Pop-Up Workshops (best for libraries/community centers): 30–45 minutes, 20–60 participants.

What We Provide

  • Plants, potting supplies, table setup, and cleanup

  • Take-home care guides + “Planet Protector” action sheet

  • Bilingual materials (EN/ES) on request

  • Trained youth educators and volunteers

Learning Goals

By the end of a session, students can:

  • Explain one connection between plant care and climate/sustainability

  • Identify one action they can take at home or school

FAQ

How do I bring planting smiles to my organization?

Reach out to Planting Smiles (See Contact Us page) and include your name and organization and we’ll be in touch!

How many students per session?

20–35 is ideal; for larger groups we run back-to-back sessions or pop-up format.

What age group is the program designed for?

Our lessons are tailored for K–5 students, but we can adapt the language and activities for younger (UTK) or older elementary students.

What materials or space do hosts need to provide?

All we ask for is a table, chairs, and a safe indoor or shaded space. We bring plants, soil (if potting on site), care guides, and cleanup supplies.

What if students can’t take plants home?

We offer classroom plants or gift-a-plant options.

Are the plants safe?

Yes. We use a variety of non-toxic plants, which are safe for children and pets.

Is there a cost?

Programs are no-cost for partner schools and libraries; we operate on donations and voulenteers.

Can parents attend or participate?

Absolutely! Parents are encouraged to join our public sessions and often enjoy learning alongside their children.
